I could have saved money buying this quality unit first. This hub replaces the $ 7-port usb hub I purchased in 2012. Sure, the old one lasted 3 years but it was time to replace it since the wires were hanging out due to cheap construction. This ORICO hub is built rock-solid with a black aluminum enclosure that looks great next to my custom-built black gaming pc. Even if you're a clutz like I was, if the USB wire snags on will just unplug. The cheap unit I had before pulled all the wires from within the unit damaging it. The blue led lights indicating a usb plug is "on" are just the right amount of brightness while still remaining subtle and not overpowering to the eye. All my ports are running at true usb speeds and it's simple to plug and play. My only complaint about this unit (and it's a minor complaint) is that the power brick is at the plug. And it's the type of power/plug that will block the outlet below it. Luckily I had space on my UPS (backup batter unit) to plug it in. I don't like plugs that block the neighboring outlet. Bad design. Not enough to take away a star. Finally, there might be something better out there but this is the highest quality USB hub I found. Bonus: there is an on/off button on the back. It's nice to have if going on vacation to eliminate power waste.
The ORICO 4 port USB hub is well built from pretty solid aluminum, no plastic here. The connectors are nice and tight and well fitted to the casing. Aesthetically the hub looks great with an Apple iMac or MacBook Pro and it's nice that the switch, power and computer connection sockets are located on the back, out of the way. This allows for a tidy desktop and with the USB connectors on top easy access too. I like the size and weight as it is solid enough not to slide around all over the desktop and big enough for ease of accessibility. I am using it with an iMac with 4 buss powered G-drive Mini's hooked up, one for my Time Machine backups and three others for sound library's and other content. I plan on getting the 7 port hub next for various USB keyboards, drum pads, printer and software keys.
UPDATE: I have noticed that the second USB port disconnects the drive connected to it upon the iMac's wake up from sleep. This results in a prompt that the drive has not been properly disconnected. Unplugging the drive and plugging back in re-mounts it with no apparent problems. I deducted one star for this and have adopted a wait and see approach before making further judgements.
OK, it works. I plugged in 12 hard drives and it handles them all. HOWEVER, you must keep in mind: this thing only comes with a small 25 watt power supply! Each of the hard drives I plugged in has its own independent power supply. So, if you take a bunch of thumb drives and plug them in and try to use then in a RAID configuration, you may exceed the maximum load limit and the hub won’t work. This is the nature of USB.
A PC has 1 amp available to power whatever you plug in. So, if the ORICO Hub has 13 ports, take 13 and divide it into 5 minus the power to light all those LEDS and its internal logic circuitry, you may only have 300 MA to drive something.
It depends upon the thumb drive, how fast it is, its size and age, but you could over load the hub. You know how modern specs are. Most don’t list how much power is required for thumb drives, or for that matter, what the power requirements for any USB device is. Keyboards and mice usually take very little power in order to conserve on laptop battery charge. As for thumb drives, the idle current is probably minimal. It just when they are heavily reading and writing, they may take much more power.
